What is IPO Subscription Status?
IPO subscription status shows how many times an IPO has been subscribed compared to the total shares offered. For example, if an IPO is "3x subscribed," it means investors have bid for 3 times the available shares. Higher subscription indicates stronger demand and usually correlates with better listing day performance.
Subscription data is published by the stock exchanges (BSE and NSE) during the IPO bidding period, typically updated multiple times each day. You can track live subscription status on Arthneeti's IPO Dashboard.
Understanding Subscription Categories
IPO shares are reserved for different investor categories. Each category has a separate subscription multiple:
| Category | Who | Share Reserved | Min Investment |
|---|---|---|---|
| QIB | Mutual funds, banks, FIIs, insurance companies | 50% | No limit (institutional) |
| NII / HNI | High Net-worth Individuals | 15% | > ₹2 lakhs |
| Retail (RII) | Individual investors | 35% | Up to ₹2 lakhs |
| Employee | Company employees (if reserved) | Varies | Usually at a discount |

What Do Subscription Multiples Mean?
| Subscription | Meaning | Allotment Chances |
|---|---|---|
| < 1x | Under-subscribed — fewer bids than shares available | Very high (almost guaranteed) |
| 1x - 3x | Moderately subscribed | Good chances |
| 3x - 10x | Well subscribed — strong demand | Moderate (lottery-based for retail) |
| 10x+ | Heavily oversubscribed | Low (1 in 10+ chance for retail) |
When is Subscription Data Updated?
During the IPO bidding period (typically 3 days for mainboard IPOs), subscription data is updated by BSE and NSE at regular intervals:
- Day 1: First update around 5 PM after bidding opens at 10 AM
- Day 2: Updates at 12 PM, 3 PM, and 5 PM
- Day 3 (final): Updates every 2-3 hours. Final tally by 7-8 PM
Note: Final subscription numbers can change significantly on Day 3, especially in the QIB category, as institutional investors often bid on the last day.
Subscription vs Allotment — What Happens Next?
After bidding closes, the registrar processes applications and determines allotment:
- If subscription < 1x: All applicants get full allotment
- If subscription > 1x (retail): Allotment is done via lottery. Each applicant gets either 1 lot or nothing
- If subscription > 1x (HNI/QIB): Pro-rata allotment based on bid size
Allotment typically happens 5-6 business days after the IPO closes. You can check allotment status on the registrar's website (e.g., Link Intime, KFin Technologies).
